Our number one reason for using cloth diapers is to save money. So far, I've spent less than $500 on my stash. As long as I don't get too sentimental & am able to sell some of my diapers to fund the next size, we should be able to stay under $1000 for all of the diapers our kids will ever need. The average cost of disposable diapers, per child, from birth-potty learning, is just under $3,000. SO, that means if we stick to my budget & keep it under $1000 we'll save $2,000 on the first child & then the FULL $3,000 on the next child! Amazing!
Our number two reason for using cloth diapers is to conserve resources and reduce waste. By using cloth diapers and wipes we are keeping thousands of pounds of trash out of land fills. I use "family cloth" (cloth toilet paper) and "mama cloth" (cloth menstrual products) as well. We also do not purchase paper/plastic/or styrofoam products. We use dish towels and rags in the kitchen and glass plates that can be washed and reused.
Our third reason for choosing cloth diapers is because of the chemicals and "unknown" agents at work in disposable products. I have extremely sensitive skin and putting products full of man-made agents and chemicals against my baby's bottom is not the way I want to go.
I don't know what sparked the idea for me but within about 20 minutes of online searching, I found www.diaperswappers.com and was hooked!

The savings really add up with subsequent children for cloth diapering!
I'd love to hear if you have an overnight CDing solution that lets your kids sleep through the night...
Isn't it amazing how much money you save? I will say though, that some of my size medium stuff needs some "fixing" on my part for subsquent kids - my daughter has been in medium covers for over a year now and the velco and elastic are starting to get worn. The prefolds though are still in excellent condition! :)
I also agree w/ you regarding the chemicals in disposables - it's amaizing how my daughter's rashes went away when we put her in cloth. Look forward to reading more from you!
Thanks for joining along in my meme! I like coming over to your blog too cause I can see how big my baby is at the moment! It's fun to have a due date buddy. :-)
Wow, I have never heard of cloth toilet paper! Don't think my husband would ever go for that though.TeeHee.
I am all about saving money too! That is why I am kinda annoyed that I spent so much on the expensive dipes...but that just means I need to have like 4 kids so I can really brag about the savings! LOL
Saving $$ was our big thing here too. ANd I love diaper swappers!
Wow! You are really dedicated to cloth using cloth toilet paper! Good for you! I don't think that would ever fly with my hubby!
You'll love your CDs!
congrats on your first little one!
I hope your little one arrives safetly! I started CDing to save $$ too. I went with a OS diaper though, and have LOVED it! I make my own, and had to come up with a good pattern that would fit well. I lov the OS opetion as I have never had more than 20 diapers, and I have clothed 5 of my 6 kids! Doing 2 at a time quite a few times.
