Argh, did you know today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day? I did & I've been celebrating all day....
There's been a bit of a hoopla on the inter-webs today about a picture that made its way onto Facebook.
I liked the picture when it came across my news-feed and then I didn't think any more of it. Until it popped up on Diaperswappers (and let the drama begin) and then on my Google reader on a blog that I happen to adore. It seems that the mama behind, Live with Levi, re-posted the picture on Facebook and got a huge debate started on her wall. Now, there has been an official "update" from the creators of the picture at Granolababies.com.
I am VERY passionate about several parenting issues.
Circumcision is one of them. I was ignorant (to a point) about circumcision when Luke was born and let Tim "win" that argument. After what Luke went through we both swore we would NOT circumcise any more boys. Then I got pregnant with Vinnie and had SO much angst because Tim was wanting to go back on his promise. I finally poured it out to him that I could NOT LIVE WITH MYSELF if I went and circumcised Vinnie and he agreed that if meant that much to me, we wouldn't do it. So, I am on one of those moms with one boy who is and one who isn't....I can see both sides of the fence. What I cannot see, is KNOWING that it is wrong and not in any way customary anymore, and still doing it. I will attempt to educate and change your mind as best as I can until the deed is done...but if you still choose to circumcise your baby boy, guess what, most likely it won't be a deal breaker and we'll still be friends. Ultimately, past actions can't be changed, especially this one, and if I otherwise like you as a person, I'll still like you after this. So, while I do have some "judgement" of those that circumcise their children, I am still very tolerant and not obnoxious or rude.
I am also passionate about breastfeeding, co-sleeping, extended rear-facing, and all of the facets of attachment parenting. These things make up who I am as a mom. They are all things that I believe directly impact who my children will grow up to become. Nursing your babies is such an awesome thing and I think EVERYBODY should at least try. I do know that it isn't for everybody though, heck, lots of the time I don't like it! (GASP!) Yes, there are times, almost 3 years into it, that I wish even for just one day, that my boobs were mine! Co-sleeping (not using CIO ever) is also important to me, I don't think babies or toddlers should be made to fall asleep alone or cry themselves to sleep. The things it does to their hormones and trust in their parents can only be negative. There are days where I wish I could just tell Luke to go to bed and then relax myself. Its on those days that I remind myself, before too long, he'll be a big boy and snuggling with his Mommy (or Daddy) won't be cool and I'll miss his sticky little hands getting tangled in my hair as they are wrapped around my neck. Extended rear-facing just makes sense to me and I want others to realize that it is a financial possibility that could save their children's lives. I am disappointed and saddened when friends choose to forward face their kids, especially if the seat they already own could rear-face, but it isn't a deal breaker for me. As an attachment parent, I pretty much prescribe to all methods of gentle parenting and I wish that every baby and child could be parented with respect and dignity However, these are the choices I have made for MY kids, for my family, the choices that others make regarding these issues DO NOT EFFECT me or my kids at all. So, who am I to judge? I'm not perfect and I don't claim to be.
Luke has gotten "spankings"--swats on the butt when he doesn't behave. Its an extreme, last resort measure, but sometimes he just won't listen. This goes against EVERYTHING AP/Gentle discipline, but, I'm not perfect. I'd love to say I've raised my kids without every disciplining them physically, but I just can't. I was raised to get a "good butt whooping" every now & then when needed and I turned out okay.
Luke is the world's PICKIEST eater. And we cater to it. I am a picky eater. I hate being made to eat things I don't like. So, I don't force my kids to eat things they don't like either.
Luke is circumcised, Vinnie is not. If it ever becomes an issue, we'll have to explain to Luke that we knew some of the facts but didn't realize all that it involved and we are sorry we made that decision for him. Hopefully, it doesn't cause any kind of rift between the boys.
I have let both boys cry, a few times. I hate it, but there have been times in both boys' lives, that their crying or fit throwing, or refusal to sleep was just too much for me to bear and I would leave them in a safe place and walk away for a few minutes. (normally the crib) To go pee, get a drink, calm down for just a minute so I could be the mom I wanted to be. Their tears break my heart, but I know they forgive me when they are so happy to see me when I get back.
I spend time on my computer in the morning, and when I get a few minutes of quiet time throughout the day. The boys aren't ignored and are safe. Facebook is my doorway to my friends....without the support groups I have on Facebook and Diaperswappers, I'd be a lonely, stressed out mess. Reconnecting with women who love me for who I am, no matter what, helps me be a good Mommy.
I sneak the things the boys are allergic to, even though I know it effects them through my milk. I can't make myself commit to a 100% corn, dairy, & soy free life.
But, like I'm sure most moms out there do, I try my best.
I spend time with them each day, loving them, snuggling them, tickling them. I kiss their boo-boos and play pretend games that make no sense whatsoever.
I pour myself into making their lives happy and whole. They know they are loved.
I try. I don't always succeed, but I'm human, and nobody should expect me to be perfect. I certainly can't expect anybody else to be either.
So, I hope, we can all just GET ALONG. Its okay to disagree. Really, it is. But, be respectful. Don't bash someone else just to make yourself feel better. I like the gist of what the GranolaBabies folks quotes---you'll get a lot further with honey than with vinegar. So, lets all play nice.

Friend Making Monday
What are your New Year's Resolutions?
Hmm....what are my resolutions for the coming year.
Well, before I can answer that question I have to think about what 2010 will be bringing for us.
Jan 18-Luke will be 3 months old
Jan 23-Tim and I will have been together 6 years
Feb 18-Luke will be 4 months old
March 18-Luke will be 5 months old
April 4-Luke's first Easter
April 18-Luke will be 6 months old
May 18-Luke will be 7 months old
June 14-Tim's 28th birthday
June 18-Luke will be 8 months old
End of June-Chrissy & her kids are hopefully moving out
July 7-Carolynn's 3rd birthday
July 18-Luke will be 9 months old
Aug. 5-Our fourth anniversary
Aug. 18 Luke will be 10 months old
Sept. 18-Luke will be 11 months old
Sept. 25-My 27th birthday
Oct. 18-Luke's first birthday
Nov. 18-Luke will be 13 months old
Nov. 25-Thanksgiving in Pennsylvania
Dec. 18-Luke will be 14 months old (talk to doctor about TTC)
So, I would like to get into shape before Jan 2011. That's when we plan on starting to TTC our next baby. Luke will be 15 months old & I need to be in top physical shape so I can have a successful VBAC. I weight about 180 right now & my "ideal" weight is 140 so I've got 40 lbs to lose. That's 1.25 lbs a week or 3.33 lbs a month. It would be great if I lost it faster, but I don't want to set an unrealistic goal. The ways I plan to achieve this goal are walking with Luke & Carolynn daily, getting on my Wii Fit as often as possible, and watching what I eat.
I'd like to get our finances worked out a little better so that by Luke's birthday in October we can have a SMASHING first birthday party. Mark your calendars Oct. 16, 2010--party day! I want to get him a Thomas the Train table and lots of Thomas accessories. The ways we plan to make this goal possible include paying off my car (with our tax return) or getting rid of it, managing our finances/budget even better, and cutting our grocery and gas bills.
I think those are my only resolutions. What are yours?

Diaper Tips Tuesdays!
I am once again participating in Diaper Tips Tuesday!
Week 3:
What is your favorite Cloth Wipes solution and/or recipe?
Unfortunately, my post is going to be rather LAME.
Luke is allergic to wipe solution! Cry! I had some wipe bits that I got from a WAHM on diaperswappers in a yummy flavor, and we tried them. Poor Luke got an awful diaper rash. SO, we switched back to sposie wipes (what a pain!).
When we finish w/ the sposie wipes that we have in the house, we're going to go back to our cloth wipes, with just plain old water. Luke gets a bath daily, so plain water is fine for his "clean ups".
I also use cloth wipes ("family cloth") and I do not use any solution. I keep a diaper pail (mini) in my bathroom for my wipes & for Luke's diapers when we change him in our room, so it all just goes into the diaper laundry!

Diaper Tips Tuesdays!
The Cloth Diaper Report is hosting "Diaper Tips Tuesdays"...and I thought I'd play along.
This week's task is: Share your Thanksgiving travel stories and upcoming holiday travel plans. Cloth, hybrids (i.e. Grobaby or gdiapers) or 'sposies?
Well, we didn't "travel" for Thanksgiving, but we did spend the entire day at the in-laws house.
I took with me: my breast pump, 12 preemie prefolds, 12 Katedanzer wipees (to use as doublers, 3 covers (2 preemie prowraps, one NB pull on), and about 8 sposies. We didn't need the sposies or even all 12 diapers. I also took a tote bag to put the dirty diapers in. I don't have any wet bags or pail liners & I knew a ziploc bag wouldn't be big enough to get through the day.
For Christmas, we'll be heading to Pennsylvania to see my family. I'll bring my entire stash. I'll also bring my 7th Generation Laundry detergent. My parents don't mind me doing diaper laundry at their house & we'll try to keep things as normal as possible!
That's my tip! Keep it as routine as possible!

Meal Plan Monday
So, I've been making a meal plan for about 8 weeks now. It's working out pretty well for us. It helps keep the grocery bill down and makes me more willing to actually cook dinner! Of course we also have to include lunches & breakfast foods in our meal plan, otherwise our shopping would be seriously incomplete!
This meme is hosted by orgjunkie.com & my friends at Happily Domestic are playing along too...
For breakfast we have available:
English muffins, toast, oatmeal, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, a couple other cereals, and a few clementines
For lunch we have available:
Microwave mini raviolis, Cup A Noodle soups, boxed soup, Ramen noodle soup, Mac n Cheese, Hot Dogs, Turkey meat (need provolone cheese), and grilled cheese
Monday- tacos w/ cheese, macaroni and cheese
Tuesday- homemade pizza (need pepperoni)
Wednesday-rice and gravy from the crock pot
Thursday- tuna casserole, Cold Stone for dessert (free birthday coupon!)
Friday- grilled or baked chicken w/ boxed potatoes
Saturday- spaghetti sauce
Sunday-grocery shopping day!

Friend Making Monday
Here's a new meme I think I'll try to get in on...if I can keep up. I like memes, they make for good blog fodder when I have not the time, energy, or sanity to write a real post!
I found FMM on Mama Kenz Studio Blog...but it is hosted over at aeFilkins Blog!
So, basically, it's a random 20 questions each week! Here I go...
1. Do you cook every night?
I make dinner every night except for the weekends, when we often do left overs, eat out, or "fend for yourself". It doesn't always entail "cooking" because we menu plan & some things don't get cooked or they get cooked in preparation a day earlier.
2. What kind of laundry detergent do you use & why?
Seventh Generation Free and Clear HE
3. Do you do laundry every day or loads at a time?
I wait until we're either out of clothes or out of room to keep the dirty laundry & then do a whole bunch of loads in one day. I'd never be able to do them one a day & actually put it away. I prefer to put it all away marathon style.
4. How often do you eat out per week?
Once a week for a "real" meal normally & then maybe once a week for fast food for just me.
5. Where do you usually eat out?
Tim and I eat at I-Hop every Sunday after church. (We RARELY change it up.) I like McDonald's fries!
6. What is your favorite retail store?
Kohl's though lately it's Babies R Us, obviously.
7. What's your favorite thing to drink?
Pepsi
8. Do you take vitamins? What kind?
Um yea, too many. I take a Prenatal Multivitamin, Vitamin D, Iron, and DHA (Expecta).
9. What percentage of the household chores to you do?
All of the household chores. Tim helps when asked & given a list. He does all of the yardwork & fixings....
10. Do your children do chores? {Or will they, did they, etc}
Luke will help keep his playroom clean by the time he's 2. Carolynn & Grayson are both very good at "clean up time" so we'll stick with that for Luke...right now his chore is to grow into a healthy baby boy!
11. Do you go to church?
Yep, at least 3x a month. Plus we're about to start getting SUPER active in stuff there!
12. Do you have a housework schedule?
Nope, and it would never work. I kind of had a schedule when I was doing day-care, (kitchen first, laundry, living room, make beds, vacuum) but it was based on what the kids needed & where they were in the house.
13. Do you keep a working budget?
Tim does. All the time. He spends several hours once a week playing with it & tweaking it.
14. What do you do at night as a family?
Pretty much right now, eat, play on our computers, read, and watch t.v. in bed. When Luke comes, we'll read to him.
15. How do you prepare yourself for a new week?
I don't!
16. What do your mornings look like?
Yesterday & today, sleep til I want, computer til I want, shower & get the day started...
17. What time do you get up in the mornings?
Whenever I need to if I have something planned or whenever I want to if I don't....a couple more months of bliss, then it'll be whenever Luke needs me!
18. What time do you go to bed at night?
Whenever...
19. How do you manage all of the paperwork that floods into your household? {bills, school work, magazines, ads, etc}
I have piles too. All over the place. The guest bed is about to be a massive "file pile" that needs taken care of by next Friday. Fun times.
20. How do you keep your household organized? {calendars, charts, etc}
Tim and I both have digital calendars in Outlook. They are synced to our phones & to each other. I'm better at using mine that he is. I also make lists. Lots of lists. I'm kind of a list freak.

BINGO! G 40

Lots of people want to own a business….what kind of business would you own if you could have any business in the world. And if you own one already, tell us about it!
If I could own any kind of business in the world it would be a day-care center. I'd love to run a combination drop off center/preschool/tutoring center. I think it would be an excellent way to use my education and spend just the RIGHT amount of time working with kids.
In my dream world, the center would be set up to offer amenities for newborns through elementary school aged kids.
For newborns & babies, we'd have a simple day-care set up, complete with scheduled hours & activities as well as drop-off availability for parents who want to go on a date or grocery shopping without a little one in tow!
For toddlers and preschoolers, we' d have two options, parents could choose "basic" day-care, which would only include play times and snack times, but no "school" time, parents could also choose a toddler/preschool package that includes school times as well as the regular day-care options. These would work as "add-ons" to the basic package. If you want me to teach them ABCs, colors, potty training, or additonal things, they would get classes for them.
For school aged kids, we'd have before and after school care, as well as tutoring available. Tutoring and homework help would be two different things though, tutoring would be small groups of 3 or less children getting actual structured lessons from licensed teachers on different topics/subject areas, where as all after school students would get homework help.
The center would have a playground indoors and out so that the kids can get physical activity even on bad weather days as well as a big comfy "lounge" room where movies can be shown and quiet times can be had. We'd also have to have a full service kitchen and a cook to prepare meals as needed for the children. Parents could order their meals a la carte or create an account for their (older) children to choose their meals themselves.
The center would be brightly lit and well decorated & I'd have a BLAST painting murals in all of the rooms!
Best of all, we'd be open to all parenting styles & encourage cloth diapers (maybe even offer a discount!) and breastfeeding!
So, in my DREAM world, where I have lots and LOTS of money, this would be my dream job. Of course, my kids would be there with me all day. So, I guess we'd also have to offer homeschooling options too....perhaps I could take on one extra child at each age/grade level as my own kids & homeschool them too, so that would be my "roll" in the center, as well as owner.
Can you see I'm thinking while typing? That's the best kind right?

Momdot Blogger Bingo R 31

The next ball I'm going to do is R31, "On blogs, the only time you hear about someones spouse is when they are in the dog house…lets here some of the BEST things you love about your spouse or significant other."
Well, I could go on and on and about the amazing things about my husband. I love Tim with all of my heart and though we do occasionally get on each other's nerves, I would never trade him in a million years.
I could not live without Tim and have loved him since I was 14. (Even though we didn't see each other from 10th grade until my Junior year of college, I would hum this tune to myself, when I was stressed or worried. It wasn't until we started dating in 2004, that I realized that the tune was to a song that we sang at the camping trip, where we met when I was 14. It subliminally reminded me of Tim and calmed me, all those years.)
Tim is patient and kind. He is funny and entertaining. He is self-sacrificing and doesn't have a selfish bone in his body.
Tim is handsome and strong. He is honest and faithful. He loves me "just the way that I am" no matter what.
Tim is smart and loves learning. He is a great teacher and role model.
My husband truly loves me and we are 100% open with each other. We are perfect matches for one another & truly believe that our love is for ever and ever and for always & always.
Here's an edited list of things I love about my husband. Each and every one is still true, even though the list was made (and given to Tim) ages ago!
I love you.
I love it when you hug me.
I love it when you hold my hand.
